President Obama’s awkward, unreturned embrace of Occupy Wall Street is among the strangest developments of the 2012 campaign.

The tie-dyed T-shirt doesn’t fit. Obama has been the unrivaled leader in fundraising from the financial sector in recent years. Senior staffers with Wall Street connections have occupied the White House for some time now. Banks and financial-service firms have been some of the main direct beneficiaries of Obama’s economic policies.

Lisa Simeone, host of two cultural programs on National Public Radio, was fired from one of her positions last night for her leading role in the Freedom Plaza occupation in Washington, D.C. The proximate cause was a series of blogs posts in the Daily Caller asserting that she had violated NPR’s code of ethics, which Simeone denies.

There is a must-see YouTube of an Occupy Wall Street event in Atlanta, where a facilitator with a bullhorn leads “protesters” through a weird “consensus” vote to bar civil-rights icon Rep. John Lewis from speaking. A writer at FoxNews.com summed up the scene and I’d say the entire OWS movement: “Imagine some combination of Model U.N., Lord of the Flies and a Phish concert.”
